Footwear

Regarding your choice of footwear:

-Remove knobs on the front of your shoes. This is very important!

-Use shoes that are comfortable to walk in as well as riding. This year offers fewer stretches of track having to be walked through than the 2009 race, but there are still two areas that must be crossed on foot, each about 30-40 minutes long. In addition, there are plenty of creeks and rivers to be crossed as well. This means the lightest carbon soles might not be the best choice. Jørund used Mavik Fury shoes during the of2009. They did well, but your shoes of choice shouldn’t be any lighter than the Mavik Fury. Jørund safeguarded the 2009 race by having a spare set of shoes in the tech support car. One of his shoes was ruined during the 2008 race, he had a spare shoe available but it was brand new and thus uncomfortable. He always liked eggbeaters, but decided against them in fear of tearing the sole. He used XTR in 2009, removed the cleat 0.5-1cm closer to the heel of the shoe, relieving the achilles as much as possible.

Tires

”Which tires are recommended? I intend to use Crossmark 2.1. Will they be resilient enough or should I consider using for instance Ardent 2.25? Tube or tubeless?”

Alf Christian’s experience: I completed Offroad Finnmark 2008 using Racing Ralph 2.25 with stans solution and it worked well. They didn’t go flat and they provided good traction. I completed OF2009 using Ardent 2.25 and stans or similar solution, got a small leak, but it sealed up after about 2hrs of refilling air. My experience with the Ardent tire was that it gave better suspension and better traction, especially on wet surfaces. It also seemed to hold up better to wear and tear.

Private race support

”I’m reading the rules and regulations booklet and I wonder: There’s some information on private support, to have a private car following the race carrying equipment and such to the checkpoint. Is there a limitation to what the private support cars can and cannot do? It then goes on to say “receiving help from a third party is not allowed” Does that mean outside the checkpoints only?”

A private tech support car can follow the race and offer aid at the checkpoints and only at the checkpoints. (After check in, before check out) Breaking these rules will result in time penalties or disqualification from the race. Receiving help from a 3^rd party means absolutely anyone you meet except for at the checkpoints. All teams are supposed to be completely on your own outside the checkpoints! There are no exceptions unless the judges have specifically given dispensation. The rules are this strict in order to even the odds between the professional riders with a large support team and the amateurs who don’t have a support team of their own.

Tech support gear car

”Can we still send a bag containing tires, breaks etc. with the tech support car?”

Yes, you may. The tech support car will drive in front of the race carrying spare parts the contestants have sent along, in addition to a lot of the regular spare parts such as chains, tires, tubes, wires, knobs and bolts etc. This gear will be available at all checkpoints marked “tech support car” in the checkpoint list at the back of the race rules and regulations booklet.

“Wonderful! Does that mean we need to send off our own spare parts or will there be a selection available for everyone?”

Our tech support car offers both options. The most ordinary spare parts such as tires, wires and chains are available at all checkpoints the tech support car is at. Purchases will be charged after the race is completed. Larger pieces of equipment such as wheel sets, cranks, brakes and special spare parts for your bike can be placed in the tech support car so they’re available at the various checkpoints. We also advice all riders to have a certain amount of tools/spare parts in their backpacks during the race, considering the checkpoints are few and far between. How to download the GPS tracks: Download the tracks and store them on your hard drive. If you store the the gpx track, please remember to store it as “map.gpx”. Then, open the Garmin MapSource and open the downloaded GPS track. Transfer to the GPS using the appropriate program.

Download Google Earth to your computer.

To see the track of one of the teams in offroadfinnmark, go to the resultatservice pages on www.offroadfinnmark.com , choose “final results” of the of300 or of700. At the bottom of the page, choose “download tracklog”. Double-click to open the file.

If there have been any issues with the team tracking; only the newest part of their track will be available. Problems with the tracking can also cause “straight lines” between specific points of the track. This can also be due to low signal quality in the area.

Prologue equipment/safety gear

During the prologue the riders must have a backpack containing a cell phone, dry clothes, wind breakers, and whatever food/drinks they’ll want after completing the prologue. The riders need to decide for themselves what tools and equipment they’ll want to bring along in addition to the required gear.

Gear OF300

The same rules apply for gear used in of300 as in of700. Racing in the outback demands high quality safety gear. We will be supplying all riders with maps of the race track, but using this a lot, especially during rain showers, will be highly ineffective. The GPS should be attached to the stem, but it's not mandatory.

Team racing

This race is for teams only. The main reason is that the race track is situated in rural areas and the outback. For safety reasons, we cannot offer single rider races.

The all-inclusive package deal offroadfinnmark offers for the of700 contestants accommodation at the Gakori elementary school Friday July 20nd to ThursdayJuly 26th. The all-inclusive package deal for the offroadfinnmark300 race includes accommodation at the Gakori elementary school from Friday July 20nd till Monday July 23th.
